About Dave Bowman
Expertise
I will answer questions of a general nature regarding life insurance, disability income insurance annuities (fixed and variable) and long term care insurance. Also, questions regarding estate analysis. No legal or accounting advice, as I am not a lawyer or a CPA. I do not sell health insurance, so have limited knowledge of the current status of that field.

Question
My grandmother died back in 97 and my dad was the beneficiary. My dad did not know about this policy and the company just located him and sent a letter stating my grandmother had a policy and to send in her death cert and other information regarding her. Well, my dad sent in everything and a week later my father passed away. I am his Representative and beneficiary on his policies. My question is...Would I be next in line to receive my grandmothers policy since I am over all my dad things? Also, my dad sent in a photocopy of her death cert. and they need an original. How would I send off for a death cert. for my grandmother when I do not have all the information that is required?

Answer
Sorry about the passing of your dad.  If he was in fact the sole primary beneficiary, the proceeds will be payable to his estate.  If he had a will, his estate will be distributed in accordance with it.  If he did not have a will, his estate will be distributed in accordance with the laws of descent and distribution of the state in which he was a resident at the time of his death.

You should be able to obtain a copy of your grandmother's death certificate from the coroner's office in the county in which she died.  If you are the administrator of your father's estate, (which it appears you are), you should be able to sign the claims form for the insurance policy on your grandmother.

Good luck!
