Life Support Issues - Concerned about 92 year old mother

Expert: Margot RN BScN CGN - 1/18/2009

Question
My mother had a knee replacement recently and came through the surgery and p.t. quite well. She has recently had bowel problems (constipation) which I was able to correct with a laxative. The only thing she wants to do now is sleep, and has been in bed for 3 days. I continue to try to get her to drink, and am only able to get jello and yogurt in her. If she tries to eat something solid, she begins to choke. She complains of an upset stomach and dizziness. I am concerned that she needs more fluid than she is able to ingest by mouth. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Carol

Answer
Hi Carol and thanks for writing,

I suggest trying frequent, small portions of her favourites foods (don’t worry about health at this point so it doesn’t matter if she’ll only eat ie cream 4-5 times a day).

You can always supplement less nutritious foods with crushed MultiVits or Polycose powder; you should also try the various Ensure/Boost products – they come in many flavours and several consistencies (milkshake, pudding, bars, etc …).  If she enjoys sweets, try sweet juices you know she likes, or if she prefers sour, offer small cups of yogurt.

I hope this helps, just keep trying and repeat whatever works.

Margot
