Life Support Issues - peg feeding

Expert: Margot RN BScN CGN - 2/1/2009

Question
hello, could you please give some information on peg feeding as in my sister is the victim of a car accident 13yrs ago she has never been right since the accident but her brain functions have greatly deteriated over the last yr the hospital need to peg feed her but we are wondering as a family will she ever be able to eat normally again or taste ie a wee bit of ice cream

Answer
Hi Gretta and thanks for writing,

It is really hard for me to guess why they are putting in a PEG tube, but from what you describe I think it will probably be there forever.

I recommend you simply askthe doctors, you are the family and have the right to be informed of why medical decisions are being considered.  Simply ask “why do you feel she needs the PEG tube, and will this be a temporary or permanent source for feeding”?

I hope this helps and I wish you and your family all the best,

Margot
