Life Support Issues - Life after death

Question
Hello, my name is Emily Konzier.  I am a student at Shaler Area High school.  My classmates and I are doing this project about asking experts our burning questions, which we've always wanted to know the answers to.  My question is, if hair and fingernails continued to grow after death, how long would they grow for?  I thank you for your time, and if you could get back to me by Thursday evening I'd appreciate it.  Thanks again.

Answer
Hi Emily and thanks for writing,

Hair and nail growth Decomposition accounts for one of the most widely-held myths concerning death: that the hair and nails grow after a person dies. This is simply a trick on the eyes. When the body begins decomposing, the cells break down, exposing more of the hair shaft and nail beds causing the appearance of hair and nail growth.

I hope this helps,

Margot
