Life Support Issues - new york stage 4

Expert: Margot RN BScN CGN - 10/13/2006

Question
My mother has been ill for a long time (years of health problems).  They have begun to really take a toll on her.  Her doctor visit today...doctor stated that she is in a new york stage 4.  She will not be getting much better..I know this now.  Doctor was even telling that some people live 6-12 months...some live longer but her organs will start of give up even more in the next few months.

So my question to you is...What exactly does New York Stage 4 mean...terminal?.
I've tried searching the internet...but found nothing on NEW YORK STAGE 4.

I have only heard of stages in cancer.

Answer
Hi Nettie and thanks for writing,

Stage 4 generally refers to a cancer that has spread to another organ (ie: Breat Ca that has spread to the Liver and/or Brain) but I do not know that your Mom has Ca or that is what the doctor is referring to as I have never heard of a "NEW YORK STAGE 4".

Prognosis is different for everyone as there are so many factors that can affect it (prior health, other diseases, current health, genetics, etc). It could be 3 months, and it could be a year; the best thing to do is take it day by day, enjoy every moment and make sure you keep your Mom comfortable and well hydrated.

I hope this helps and please feel free to write back if I can be of any more assistance.

All my best,

Margot
