About Tom Horne
Expertise
I`m well versed in classical literature, from Greek mythology up to the Pre-Renaissance, including Homer, Dante, Bocaccio, Virgil. I`m currently a writer who incorporates many classical references in my work, so I constantly keep myself involved, and I`d be happy to help anyone in need of some help, a reference, etc.

Literature - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Expert: Tom Horne - 6/2/2008

Question
What does the word "Rime" mean in the title "The Rime Of the Ancient Mariner?" How is "Rime" reflected in the story?

Thanks in advance!

I just don't understand how the classic definition of rime per the dictionary fits into the story. Obviously I am not an expert, just a little confused.

Answer
Hi, John.
Rime is just an ancient spelling/alteration of rhyme.  In this case, it is used as "poem."  You might say the Rimes of William Shakespeare as synonymous with the Poems of William Shakespeare, even though they don't really rhyme in all cases.  I can see where your confusion lies, but don't read too much into it.  Rime is simply another word for "poem"
I hope that helps...TOM
