Question
Hello,

I have done so much research on English Literature but I still need some help. Where can I find essays from the Old English (Anglo-Saxon) and Middle English periods? Anywhere from 450-1500.

Answer
Hi Hector,

Locating essays usually requires the use of a library. I think you mean you want to locate essays that discuss the Anglo-Saxon and Medieval periods; you're going to have a tough time finding essays actually written during these eras as this genre is a more modern one.

The Norton Anthology of English Literature (volume 1) should be quite helpful as there is commentary on works written during these time periods. You will also find works cited that you can find more scholarship on.

Libraries also pay for databases such as JSTOR and Gale Group which have a wealth of material. These are not usually accessible from home as these are for institutional use. Private users can register but they are quite expensive.

I hope this is helpful.
