Living on a Budget, Saving Money - Poor?

Expert: Jaynee Sasso - 5/5/2009

Question
If you live on welfare and medicaid, does that mean that you are poor but you don't live under poor conditions?
Are low income and poor the same?
But what if you have more than what you need?
Plus you have the basic neccessities?
Does this make you poor?

Answer
Poor my friend is a state of mind. Sometimes life throws a person a few curve balls and knocks them flat on there back. As a result, they may have to seek out support to help get back on their feet (which includes welfare, medicaid, bankruptcy, credit counseling etc). As long as they don't become dependent on the support that they are receiving (no matter what form it's in) they are not poor. I'd rather say financially challenged. It's a temporary state.

However, a person that uses their lack as an excuse not to progress financially, socially or otherwise is poor. They are poor in their thinking and spirit because they believe that they are a victim of their circumstances. Unfortunately, this type of person doesn't believe that they can do better and will rely on others (ex welfare, medicaid, parents, friends etc) to provide what they could easily do for themselves.

Based on the questions you asked it seems that you are possibly describing a person that lacks motivation and hasn't identified a great enough reason to move beyond their comfort  zone.

Wealth and prosperity is not about an individual but its about serving other people. The better you do the more people you are in a position to help. You sure can't help too many with a limited amount resources.

Typically, people desire to have money for the wrong reasons and as long as they get what they want they are okay. In my opinion you are poor if your world and all that you have (great or small) completely revolves around you.
