Living on a Budget, Saving Money - Young Investor

Expert: Gina Boykin - 5/9/2009

Question
Hey Gina, my name's Tony and I'm a young investor and I live in Canada. Investing to me is fascinating stuff and it makes me tick. Ive been learning all sorts of things from Callable CD's to options and derivatives. My question regards new investments. i was watching the business news network and they always have this guy named Kevin O'Leary who is a top notch investor and he always seems to have news on new investment products that have hit the market. Is there a website or a source that lists new investments to the marketplace?

Thanks so much for your help
Tony

PS: A few days ago I wrote a financial contract to myself that states how I will save and spend my money as follows;

10% Investments
10% Charity
5% Micro-lending {To people in other countries who want to start business}
5% To build an endowment {To donate to a university or college years from now}
70% Living, food, family and other expenses {I don't have too many of these type expenses yet}

I'd greatly appreciate your opinion on this allocation

Again thanks

Tonyyy :D

Answer
I'm not aware of one comprehensive website that lists new investments.  This is because it is highly unlikely that one person or company has knowledge of every new investment (especially since many investments may be international these days).  BNN has a team of people who spend hours researching new investments and I'm sure they use several sources - via internet, print media (magazines and newspapers), and discussions with individual brokerage firms. To get a good variety of information, you can do the same, by subscribing to a magazine, newspaper, or e-listing that highlights new investments, by finding a few good individual websites to review, and developing a relationship with individual brokers.  If you are expecting to invest a large sum, your personal broker will be your best source because part of his or her job is to find good investments for you.

Regarding your allocation, it looks very good. The key to building wealth is to live on less than you make so you can invest in your future. Looks like you are on your way to a great start!
