Living on a Budget, Saving Money - getting my husband out of spending addiction

Expert: Jaynee Sasso - 5/6/2009

Question
I am frustratied with my husbands spending - I have talked to him about it, how can I be more convincing that it's a major problem in our family, esp. since we have to apply for help for even our basic family needs?

Answer
Hi Leann,

I truly understand your frustration and want you to know that you are not alone. Many people struggle within their marriages because of financial strain. Talking to your spouse is often not enough. You must show them. They need to see on paper how their spending impacts the family budget. You also need to describe the steps that you have taken to improve the family's overall financial health. He must understand that you are not asking him to make sacrifices that you are not already making. Often there is a lack of trust and the one party refuses to change simply because they feel that the other party is not making the same sacrifices. To ease any feelings of mistrust I suggest allotting you both an allowance within the family budget for your own personal use. This will reinforce the fact that both parties are equally sharing the responsibility.

If after showing him the family budget and sharing with him your concerns he still continues with the same behavior you may want to consider the following:

(a) Marriage counseling- there may be a deeper issue within the marriage
(b) Seek additional help from an organization such as Debtors Anonymous. He may have a compulsive disorder and need professional help.  For more info visit http://www.ncdaweb.org/SpendingSigns.html

Unfortunately, he has to admit that he has a problem and then be willing to seek out additional help. Until then you will have to take responsibility for the financial well being of your family.
