Locksmithing/Lost key - Master

Question
Hi,

I recently lost one set of my keys ( Schlage lock ) to the apartment. I now have two options, either rekey or buy new key.
My landlord says, the new key should be accesible by Master. What does that mean. Can I buy any new same model Schlage lock. Do I have to get locksmith to accomplish this? If so does the locksmith need the master key?

Unfortunately, my landlord is not giving me any info. Possible that she doesn't know herself. All she is saying is it should work with master.

Please advice.

Thanks

Answer
Hello,

The landlord uses a master key to access their rental properties.  If you buy a new lock you'll have to get it rekeyed so that their master key will operate it, in addition to a key that you can use.  They will need the master key to rekey the lock and I wouldn't advise anyone but a locksmith doing that for you.
