Locksmithing - Removing a Schlage entry handle lock

Expert: Lynn Chambers - 11/6/2009

Question
Hi Lynn,
I have a newer Schlage lock for the entry door. This is a handle lock set that has a separate handle without a lock, and a dead bolt with a thumb lever on the inside to lock/unlock w/o key. I am trying to take it apart to rekey. I took out the two screws from the inside plate. But I cannot remove this plate. I can wiggle it, but it would not come loose. Is this plate held on by friction by snapping onto an hidden anchor? Or, is the plate being held by door paint? The outside part would not come loose either. Is it safe for me to use two longer screws and hammer on them to push the outside part loose? Thanks for the help.

Answer
I say paint may be holding it on; try a wooden block pressed up against the outside of the lock, and hit the block lightly with a hammer,or hit the outside of the lock with a screwdriver handle.Send a photo if you cannot get it apart,if this does not work.
