Locksmithing - Schlege Electric keypad deadbolt
Expert: Patrick D. Harrington - 11/5/2009
Question Are these more secure than regular deadbolt since lock picking and bumping are becoming more common? Also, is it possible to have unit without key or can it ( keyhole) be disabled by me in some way.
One more ? is it as easy to install as advertised? I would just have to remove manual deadbolt.
Thanks so much

No,

and Possibly but again not advised!
sorry for my very brief answers to your query on these locks!
IR is a quality manufacture of many products but these types of locks are sold in department stores for one reason, convenience, Schlage does have a High security deadbolt it is a
B660 with Primus cylinder. It is a grade 1 deadbolt in Primus Keyway and is pick and bump resistant it is about the same price as the keypad lock you describe but offers muck greater strength, durability and security, pay a visit to your local locksmith and have a talk with a professional about what is available you will thank yourself for it!

To be honest I have been asked so many times about these locks I am just totally spent.
I will reiterate;
"these types of locks are sold in department stores for one reason, convenience"
You seemed to make it fairly clear you were interested in "securing" your property with a deadbolt that would not be easily comprimised by "Bumping or picking efforts".
even if you were to disable the keyed cylinder in this lock it could easily be drilled. I really can't stress to you anymore how tiered I get explaining this, it's kind of like telling your kids not to put their hand on the stove, yes it is absolutely common sense that given proper information an understanding can be reached and a more informed decision can be made without feeling as though it is blind obedience this is where I recommend that you pay a visit to a local Locksmith shop!
I do not doubt your competence in fact you can purchase hardware and take it home and install it yourself. One thing you absolutely can not do however is find high security hardware in builders supply houses like Lowes, Home Depot, ect. They are not, will not, and can not distribute this type of hardware. A visit to your local Locksmith Shop will answer allot of question you might have about hardware and undoubtedly many you may have ever been aware of. I am all about empowering my clients to make better informed decissions and that includes those who turn to me for guidance, I am sorry if you felt I was dismissing you. Please feel free to revisit anytime!
