Locksmithing - Trim piece won't reattach
Expert: Patrick D. Harrington - 11/6/2009
Question
I just installed three double cylinder Schlage Accent deadbolts - they come with an approx. 1" round trim piece to cover the screw heads on the interior side. You have to remove the trim piece to get the screws in, but once attached, I cannot get the trim piece to snap back into place. By the third installation, I very very carefully attempted to snap the trim on (pushing only on the edges) while the screws were still loose and I got it back on, but it seems that there is interference from the conical sleeve that prevents the trim from going back like it was in box.
So, my question is: am I supposed to glue these things on, or what?
Thanks for any insight.
Answer
No, you are not supposed to glue them on. tighten the mounting hardware by hand slowly making sure that the cylinder remains centered in the collar, I haven't had a problem with this before , it may be an issue with the way the door was prepped? If the holes aren't aligned in the door the cylinder may side load. One thing you can try is to locate the cover on the inside cylinder then gently tap it in place with a light weight plastic mallet. DO NOT USE A HAMMER!
I am not sure where you are installing these locks, but I hope you are aware of the dangers and legal liability posed by using them residentially Installing a lock like this in someone's home is an absolute violation of both fire and life safety codes. Both Medeco and Mul-T-Lock offer a "Captive" deadbolt that offer the protection of a double sided lock and the safety and code compliance of a single. In addition they are high security deadbolts that also offer "pick" and "bump" resistance and more importantly "key control". The key control aspect eliminates the possibility of unauthorized duplication of keys.
Once installed, there is special key that locks in place on the inside cylinder and has a thumb turn attached. While installed,(during occupancy), the lock operates like a single sided deadbolt and the key remains locked in place allowing immediate egress. When the residence or property is to be secured while vacant the thumbturn or "Captive key" is unlocked and removed allowing the door to be lock from both sides.
These locks are not cheap, but in the event of an emergency if you need to escape or if you have children then the added safety and compliance with fire and life safety codes is absolutely priceless. Give it some thought!
One nice thing with the Medeco Captive deadbolt is the inside cover it goes on very easy!
