Locksmithing - Safe Deposit Keys

Expert: Terry Andreasen (Andy) - 2/28/2009

Question
Any way of finding out which banks used LeFebure safe deposit keys?  Found one in my fathers belongings and the local bank did not have a safe deposit box registered to him.

Answer
Karen,

Unfortunately the answer is no!  I wish it was easier to id which banks use which types of safe deposit box locks but in many cases they have mixed nests with several types of locks.

I would start by checking into what banks he did business with.  You may have to check with all of the banks in that area.  If you do find the branch be prepared to open the box by having the necessary documents available from the executor of the estate.  If the box has not been paid for in several months (usually 6) the bank will have forced the box, inventoried the contents and have sent them onto the state controllers office.  You would then have to go through your state offices to recover your fathers belongings.
