Locksmithing/back door lock broken

Question
My back door is broken. I was able to take the handle off inside and outside but the "guts" are still in between the door and the doorjam. I can not remove it. The handles were turning but not opening the door so I removed them.

Answer
Hello Michele,

If you are unable to retract the latch manually, you'll need to forcefully remove the latch mechanism.  The only way to do that is with a hammer and cold chisel, destroying it then pulling it out through the hole in the door face.
