About James
Expertise
I am knowledgeable in almost every area of Locksmithing. This includes locks, keys, lost keys, residential and commercial lockouts, rekeying, masterkeying, high security locks, access control, electric locks, security cameras and home safety. I have been running an online business since 2004 where I sell all types of lock and security hardware to everyone from apartment renters to business owners to the US government. Before that I started a locksmith service in 1999. I deal with many types of security equipment including high security safe locks, heavy duty padlocks, exit devices, biometric readers, electric strikes, magnetic locks, full surface hinges and I only sell what I personally stand behind 100%. The online business has given me a more in-depth look at the locksmithing industry, helping me to learn more about each and every product that I offer, as well as products I don't have but end up finding for customers to solve any issues they have with security or door hardware.

Please don't submit any automotive or safe questions as these aren't areas that I can help in.

Experience
I have been Locksmithing since 1999 and own my own Locksmithing business. I have many years of hands-on experience through the many services I have performed for my customers. Locksmithing - storm door lock

Expert: James - 2/10/2009

Question
I am trying to change out my storm door lock and cannot figure out how to remove the old lock.  I can't find any screw to release the lock mechanism so I can slip the old lockset out of the door.

Answer
Hello Andrew,

Some storm doors have one type of lock and others have different ones.

One style has what's called a profile cylinder which operates a mortise lock.  The cylinder is installed so that the key is inserted with the cuts facing down.  Open the door and you should see 3 screws, one slightly different looking than the others.  One is a set screw that holds the cylinder in place.  It should be in line with the center of the cylinder which is about 3/4 of the way from the top of the plate on the door edge.  Remove that screw, it should be about 3" long, maybe slightly different but longer than 1/4" which would be the length of the other screws.  Once that is out, turn the thumbturn piece as you pull the cylinder.  I can't remember the exact spot but you have to line up the cam on the cylinder with a hole before it can slide out so turning the thumbturn will eventually line that up.

If you have a different type of lock please attach photos.
