Locksmithing/Index mark

Question
The safe instructions refer to 'Index Mark'. This appears to be the magical spot that allows all the opening instructions to follow. The information no where defines what the index mark is. I was making the assumption that it was the '0' in the dial. Am I correct?

Answer
On many safes there are 2 marks on the ring around the dial.

The one at 12 o'clock is the opening index. This is the mark you dial the combination to to open the safe.

The other one is the change index, this is used when changing the combination.
