I am a great-great grandson of William McFarland's younger brother, David, who worked in Brooklyn (at safemaking) with his older brother for a while. THey came from Maine as blacksmith's.  Partner Tilton was into many endeavors, including safemaking, but eventually lend his name to the prep school in New England.

My great-great grandfather, David McFarland, was William McFarland's brother.  He was also an iron safe manufacturer residing in Brooklyn.  He then became a Brooklyn policeman for nearly twenty years in the Williamsburg section, where the safe manufactory was located.  The brother's came from Maine.  Tilton School (in NH) was named for Charles E. Tilton.

Thanks Jeff, I've added your information to my library.    This is the kind of "extra" info that helps to give safes a life of their own, instead of just a hunk of metal in the corner.

If you have any documentation of the safe building done by Tilton & McFarland, I would love to see some copies of what your family has.
