Answer
Hi Laurie

You should do yourself a favor and find another locksmith, that cylinder in your hand is not going back into the lock given that it was stripped by whomever removed. I do not see any screws holding the lock in the door, (Which I might add looks like a very poor installation in the photo, upside down and the face looks to be surface mounted??). If it is a cylinder that is holding this hardware in place you MUST loosen the set screw before attempting to unscrew. Once you have removed it you will realize that no hardware you buy from an DIY big box Home supply is going to fit in the cavity left in your door by a Mortise lock. That is what you have on your door, a Mortise lock. If the gentleman who previously visited this property was a locksmith (AT LEAST TO A PROFESSIONAL LOCKSMITH NOT A HOME STORE SHOPPING HANDYMAN) he might have installed new, very common cylinders for you and there would be no issues. If you need new cylinders for these locks feel free to call and we can supply you with hardware and instructions for it's proper installation!
