Locksmithing/Remington Rand Safe

I have a remington rand safe, fire rating ME-2 (??), serial # 174360, 30"WX29"DX52"Tall. Any idea how old it is? Can the combination be changed? Any idea the value ($$)? Thanks

Remington-Rand made safes from 1926 until they were acquired by the Sperry Corporation in 1955 and all safe manufacturing ceased.   The ME series (Medium Exposure) ratings were made during the late 1940's through the early 1950's.

As far as value, you have several problems with the container.   First - containers over 50 years old do not meet any current standards for fire resistant.  Second - this manufacturer was known to use Asbestos as an insulation material.   As this is considered a hazardous material (HAZMAT), most states have strict rules regarding transportation, transfer (selling it), or disposal.   Check with your states HAZMAT officials to determine what your requirements are.    Fines can be extremely expensive if you ignore the regulations.

These containers are neither collectible or antique.   They were considered "OFFICE Equipment".   They have very little value real value.    If you were to contact me about your container, I would probably charge you to haul it away for disposal.

Sorry, I wish the news was better, but it is what it is.

This by no means indicates that you can't use the container.   While it does not meet any standards for fire resistance, and it is NOT a burglary resistive container.    It may still provide fire resistance, and I would recommend its use for GENERAL purpose documents ONLY.

This container should not be used for overnight storage of cash, jewelry or any valuable documents.

Hope this answers some of your questions.
