Locksmithing/Opening Vanguard VS-150 Fire Safe

I have an old VS-150 Fire Safe which has remained in the unlocked position since I have had it until the dial was turned the last time it was closed...I have the three number combination, but do not have the original instructions...I seem to recall that one had to go past some of the numbers before reversing direction....also I do not remember it the first turn was clockwise or counter clockwise...

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Hi Donald,

The Vanguard line of safes was a "Sears" logo.   Some of the safes were manufactured overseas and some were made by the Meilink Safe company.

There are a couple dialing sequences that you can try out:

If it is the Meilink version, the dialing sequence should be:

4 times left to the first number,
3 times right to the second number,
2 times left to the third number,
1 time right slowly until the dial stops - between 90-0

If it is one of the imports, the dialing sequences may be:

3 times left to your first number,
2 times right to your second number,
1 time left to your third number - stop - turn handle.

3 times right to your first number,
2 times left to your second number,
1 time right to your third number - stop - turn handle.

Note:   Right is clockwise, Left is counter clockwise.   Do not count the revolutions of the dial, count the individual number as it arrives at the 12 o'clock index mark.

Hope this helps,

If you still can't get it open, then you may not have the correct numbers, or you may need to have it checked out by a safe tech from a local safe company.
