Locksmithing/Schlage keyways

Question
Hi Dan,
Can you tell how do you determine the differences between Schlage keyways. Like C, E, F etc. Do they have different shapes to prevent one key from entering another?  Is there a chart I can get to determine the difference by looking at it?

They all use the same standard bow, the head of the key.

Schlage used to have a chart on their site showing all the different keyways. Schlage.com

You can also download the Ilco key catalog, the North American cylinder keys.

To compare them, put two keys together and look at them from the tip.

You can see how they differ.

They all have different grooves in them.

Usually an E key won't go in a C cylinder.

However, they do make cylinders that will accept both keys.
