Locksmithing/s&g lock on chubb safe

Hi Andy,
I got the safe home and took a couple more pictures of the lock dial. I believe it is an S&G but don't know about the series. could it be a 6730 or is it possible it is an 8500 or 8550? Hoping that it is a 6730 for easier manipulation.

Hi Bill,

Easy way to tell ("IF" you are familiar with manipulation), with a 6730 lock, you will be able to count the wheels AND figure out where the drop in location is.
With an 8500 series lock you will be able to count the wheels, but there isn't a drop in area, though around "50" you will feel a "click-click" as the drive wheel resets the lever "accelerator" assembly.    At zero (100), the dial should be able to be "pushed in" and then spring back out when released, as you are releasing the accelerator and trying to engage the lever and drive wheel.

It's kinda of like getting a blind man, to try to tell the difference between a round wheel and a square wheel - the locks are that different from each other.

I can't tell from looking at the dials in the photos - its more about operation of the lock than looks of the dial.

It also wouldn't surprise me to possibly find an S&G 6500 series vault lock installed on a Chubb safe.

6500 series are 4 wheel locks - though either the 6730 or 8500 could have 4 wheels also, though NOT common at all.    The 6500 series vault lock comes in BOTH GR1 and GR2 styles.    These are much harder to determine from the outside as to which you have, but basically if you can count the wheels AND determine a drop in location, you can possibly manipulate the lock open.

If you aren't sure which lock you have, you may be wasting time attempting to manipulate it - identification is the first and most important step, in determining the necessary method to open the lock.

Manufacturer's info can be found at:

Good luck with your attempts.
