Locksmithing/Protectall Safe # 237177

Do any of these safes have a four number combanation? Got safe from wife's grandfather after he died. We found two set of numbers. One set had three numbers the other had four. Do you know a good locksmith in the Dallas Texas area?

Hi Paul,

Generally the safes have a three wheel lock (three combination wheels) and a drive wheel.    While the fourth number is usually a "reference point", more than it is actually part of the combination, many people still write it down or think of it as the fourth number.

the dialing sequence for your lock will be either LRLR or RLRL depending on the lock installed.

The sequence is:

4 times left to the first number,
3 times right to the second number,
2 times left to the third number,
1 time right slowly, until the dial stops (this may be your fourth number)

Note:   Left is counter clockwise, Right is clockwise.  Do not count the revolutions of the dial, count the individual number as it arrives at the 12 o'clock index mark.   For instance if your first number is 50, turn the dial counter clockwise (left), stopping the FOURTH time the number 50 arrives at the index mark.

If it doesn't open, using the numbers that you have, then reverse the directions above or RLRL instead of LRLR.

Note:   I never recommend using locksmiths for safe work as they generally do not have the training, knowledge or tools to work on many safes, without causing excessive damage or charging exorbant fees.    Fortunately you have one of the largest safe companies west of the Mississippi in your neighborhood in your area.   I would recommend your contacting them for options.   If they can't help you, they can probably point you towards someone in your area to open your safe.    "IF" you can take the safe into their shop, you will save some fees over having service at your home.
