Its the latch gear box that the thumb lever works.  It has been re-designed at least 3 times since I bought my Baldwin Manchester in 1999.

Baldwin mentioned to me that its the TRANSMISSION. Their name for a small part that changes the up and down motion from the thumb lever to a rotary motion that withdraws the plunger. Mine was snapped in half rendering the lock unusable. I called them and they sent me a "kit" to make the repair at NO CHARGE.
