Actually if you install your knob with the screws going up and down rather than on either side this should correct the issue.  I live with anal ppl too!!!!

Just rotate the inner and outer knobs 90 degrees before inserting them into the latch. The knob screws won't go through the latch, but that's OK - you will have the desired locking position.
