About Gary
Expertise
Will attempt to answer any question on respiratory disease, but please don`t ask me to make a diagnosis. Although I`ve worked as a respiratory specialist nurse in the UK for 6 years, I know nothing about the health systems of other countries. I have a particular interest in asthma, COPD, spirometry, and tuberculosis.

Question
Sir,
I'm doing a project as part of Health class in which I have to interview experts. I will highly appreciate if you can answer my questions related to your career.
I was wondering, What are the pros and cons of your job?
Would a background in physical or health education help in your career?
What do you believe is the most important component of Physical and Health Education in your areas of expertise? i.e Biomechanics, Human Physiogy..etc.
What were some of the challenges in your career?
What advise would you give someone who wants to pursue a career in your field?
What are the opportunities of promotion in your job?
Sir, your littlest guidance will be of greatest help to me!
Thank you very much for your time
Sincerely,
Shahnur.

Answer
Hi Shahnur

I would say that the ability to communicate with other people is the most important skill a person needs if they are to become a good nurse.  All the other job-specific things can easily be learnt later. So long as you have the ability to talk to people you will survive in this career. I must add though, that some background knowledge of human biology helped me a lot too. I'm sure a background in health education would be very useful (but not essential).

I work in Public Health and there are pros and cons:
I work for a very large national organisation (the British NHS) and there are many benefits from this.
I have quite a lot of autonomy to make my own decisions. I have support form more experienced people if I need it.
The pay isn't brilliant but it's better than many jobs around here!
The British NHS has a good pension scheme (handy for the future)
If I was to advise someone who wanted to pursue a career in nursing in the UK, I would recommend it. There are plenty of opportunities for promotion, especially as you gain more academic qualifications and experience.

Hope this helps

regards

Gary
