Question How can I control excessive mucus in my lungs. I've followed all known directions; avoid dust, smoke, particles, fumes, etc. I take Guaifenesin twice daily to thin the mucus.
Yet I get broncitus about every 4-6 weeks. Twice this year (winter months) it turned into pneumonia.
I see my primary physician and a plumonary specialist regularly.
Answer Hi Larry,
There are a number of factors that may increase the amount of mucus in your lungs. Infection is one. It is good that you have regular contact with both your primary physician and a specialist. Have they told you why you get repeated bronchitis and pneumonia? Some lung conditions have excess mucus as one of their symptoms.
You have also made an excellent choice to avoid lung irritants. This will help greatly. A trip to a physical therapist (physiotherapist) who treats lung patients may be another avenue for you to try. They can teach you some exercises that will help clean out your lungs. There are also devices available such as flutter valves that can help.
But the most important aspect is to know and understand your underlying condition (if there is one) so have a chat with your doctors.
