About Gary
Expertise
Will attempt to answer any question on respiratory disease, but please don`t ask me to make a diagnosis. Although I`ve worked as a respiratory specialist nurse in the UK for 6 years, I know nothing about the health systems of other countries. I have a particular interest in asthma, COPD, spirometry, and tuberculosis.

Lung Disease - phlem from lung

Expert: Gary - 12/18/2005

Question
For a few years now, I have followed a daily urge to clear my lungs of phlem by coughing up  small amounts of thick green phlem.  Sometimes, it is so thick it is like a boot lace. I tend to get chest infections now too.  The hospital doctor reckoned I had bronchiatisis, a minor but permanent lung failure problem causing my lower left lobe to get conjested. I wonder.  Is there a cure perhaps ?  I should be very grateful if you could advise.  Sincerely, Dorothy Bell.

Answer
Hi Dorothy

Rather than spend time typing out a long winded response, I'll attach a link to the relevant section of a reputable website. It's the website of the British Lung Foundation and is an excellent resource. In short, there's no known cure but plenty of therapy strategies aimed at controlling symptoms.
Kind regards
Gary
