Question
Hello,---I have emphysema and was recommended I go to pulmanary rehab center,---however, my insurance will not pay for it.What can I do on my own to help this situation, and what do they do in rehab? Thank you, Jane

Answer
Hello Jane
I am not sure on some details of your health such as if you wear oxygen and how active are you and are you still a smoker?  I will give you some advice as to what you might try.
First you want to make sure you stop smoking and limit your exposure to second hand smoke.  The next thing you can do is go to the Rehab center and ask them what the charge would be per session since you do not have insurance but you have a prescription for the rehab.  I know the Rehab I went to had that option and it was like 10-20 dollars a session and maybe you go once or twice a week.  The big thing they are looking at or want to know is how your heart, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation is while you are exercising.  Exercising is usually walking on a treadmill at what ever speed is right for you.  I don't know if you have anyone medical in your family such as a nurse who could check your pulse for you and then check it again after you walked a little.  The idea is to not over stress your heart or lungs and that is what they use to judge that.  This is why I am recommending you go to the Rehab and see. Maybe you can only financially handle one visit but it will give you an idea on what you are able to handle and for how long.  You need to learn to pace yourself.  I think you could be candid with them and they will understand at the Rehab.
On your own I would recommend walking on a flat surface even if it is around your home. (depending on the weather in your area)  A stationary bike can be ideal for some building of strength and tolerence.
Practice purse lip breathing(blowing the air out of your lungs like you would blow out candles only very slowly)Try to take good deep breaths in and then purse lip blow them out.  You will find this very helpful if you over stress yourself.
I hope you find this helpful and please write me back should you have some specific questions.  Take care.
