Lupus - Lupus! and Diabetes

Expert: Cynthia Donlan - 9/29/2009

Question
Well can diabetes stem from having lupus?
If so,how could it develop from that?

Answer
Dear Corrina:

My are you the inquisitive type.

Diabetes is a separate disorder from Lupus and not all forms of diabetes are autoimmune just type I. Type II Diabetes is genetic in its nature to a certain degree but not autoimmune.

Now the medications that are given to individuals with Lupus to treat them can temporarily elevated blood sugars.   Steroids are notorious for this. I am struggling with thisd issue myself now.

Thankfully in  alot of cases once the person comes off the meds the problem disappears. Not always the case but most of the time.

If the person continues to have symptoms, they were predisposed to diabetes through genetic and environmental factors to start with.

Diabetes has its own separate causes.

Not to say that a person cannot have Diabetes and Lupus together but Lupus itself does not give a person diabetes
