Question
Hi...I had a hepatic panel test done as a result of a diagnosis of Polycythemia Vera...my Anti-DsDNA came back as positive...the only one panel test that stated positive, What, if anything, should I do with this info. My hematologist treating the Polycythemia states that she does not handle liver issues...
An expedited response would be appreciated... Thanks, Jim

Answer
Hello Jim

I am not familiar with Polycythemia Vera, but I can tell you that Anti-dsDNA usually means you have something autoimmune going on.

Here's the wikipedia page on Anti-dsDNA.

After reading this page, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that you have lupus. This test is not at all definitive; it's not a "lupus" test that tells you "yes" or "no." You can have a positive test and not have lupus, or a negative test and do have lupus. It's just on piece of the puzzle when attempting to diagnose something perhaps autoimmune.

To my knowledge, Anti-dsDNA does not denote liver issues. Perhaps kidney issues. Typically, a test result like this would point you towards a rheumatologist. That is where I would look next.
I hope this is of some help.

Well wishes-
Carla

Expertise

I can answer questions such as "what is lupus?" (How common is it? Is it contagious? What are the symptoms? etc.). Also, I can answer questions such as "what are the available treatments for lupus?" (both standard and alternative). Really, I'll take almost any question on lupus, though. If I can't answer it, I'll be very surprised, but I'll also go find someone who can.

Experience

I've been living with lupus (SLE) since 1992. I've had three severe bouts with it, including symptoms such as kidney failure and stroke (if you can call having a stroke a "symptom"). I have completely regained my health, though I have to be mindful to take care of myself, lest I get sick again. I use both mainstream and alternative medicine, and have tried just about everything under the sun to alleviate symptoms. A lot of it worked.
