Lutherans - Baptisim

Expert: Gordon F. Stoneburner - 7/28/2009

Question
My husband and I would like to baptize our baby in the Lutheran faith. The man whom we choose to assume the role as her "sponsor" is actually Muslim. He has accepted to baptize her in the Lutheran faith. I need to know is this possible?

Answer
Jennifer:

The choice of a sponsor is usually made with the idea that they accept the responsibility to insure the child is raised in the Christian faith, should the parents be unable to do so, to pray and offer support.

By  definition, it should be someone who espouses such beliefs.  A Muslim would by religious belief not be able to fulfill the obligations.

Hope this helps.

In Christ's Service,

Gordon Stoneburner
