AboutBrad Varvil Expertise I am happy to field questions regarding Lutheran theology and practice, and it's context
within the western catholic tradition. General questions on the Christian faith are also
welcome.
Experience I have served in lay ministry for over ten years, and am currently a pastor in a small, confessional Lutheran communion in the Evangelical Catholic tradition. I have worked with several Lutheran and non-Lutheran communions over the years, and have a particular fondness for catholic ecumenism.
Education/Credentials I have a BA in Religion and Philosophy from a small midwestern Lutheran college, and am completing an M.Div. at a small, independent, Lutheran seminary in the Pacific Northwest.
Question Would a Universalist (who believes that all souls will be redeemed by the atonement of Christ) be welcomed in the Lutheran church?
Answer Dear Alex,
Generally, anyone would be welcome in a Lutheran Church, regardless of their personal theology. However, if you're asking if the doctrine of universal salvation, understood that all people regardless of their faith or repentance shall be saved, would be welcome in a Lutheran Church, generally the answer would be no.
Universal salvation is contrary to the Scriptures, the words of Christ Himself, and the great tradition of the Church Fathers who have handed the faith onto us over the last 2000 years. Since Lutherans are confessionally Scriptural and catholic, we do not endorse doctrines that conflict with those standards. However, you will find people of all sorts of persuasions in Lutheran churches everywhere you go. We don't turn people away for misunderstanding the faith... We just try to educate folks when they come to walk with us.
