About Brad Varvil
Expertise
I am happy to field questions regarding Lutheran theology and practice, and it's context within the western catholic tradition. General questions on the Christian faith are also welcome.

Experience
I have served in lay ministry for over ten years, and am currently a pastor in a small, confessional Lutheran communion in the Evangelical Catholic tradition. I have worked with several Lutheran and non-Lutheran communions over the years, and have a particular fondness for catholic ecumenism.

Education/Credentials
I have a BA in Religion and Philosophy from a small midwestern Lutheran college, and am completing an M.Div. at a small, independent, Lutheran seminary in the Pacific Northwest.

Lutherans - conformation

Question
how old does my child have to be for conformation

Answer
Dear David,

There is no set age in the Lutheran tradition for the rite of Confirmation.  Usually, it occurs between fifth and ninth grades, after a series of instruction on the core elements of the Christian faith.  Lutherans usually use Luther's Small Catechism in conjunction with the Holy Scriptures as the course curriculum.  The Catechism follows a very ancient pattern from the early Church for teaching Christians (or soon to be Christians, sometimes called adult converts or catechumens) what is fundamental to Christian faith and life:  The Ten Commandments, The Apostle's Creed, The Lord's Prayer, and the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confession/Absolution.

Traditionally, when a child is mature enough to learn the fundamental precepts, they are given instruction by their pastor and parents, and when they are all satisfied that the child is ready, he or she is Confirmed.

Hope that helps-- grace and peace be with you,
Pr. Brad
