MASH/hawkeye's robe

As an owner of one of these robes, I believe the answer to be quite different. The robe visually changes color depending on the type of lighting it is in. In various lighting it can appear to be red, purple, or brown. Halogen bulbs make the robe appear to be purple at a high wattage, whereas halogen at low wattage it appears brown. Incandescent bulbs and sunlight give it a vibrant red color. I would postulate that during the narrative where Alan Alda is speaking he glanced up at the robe on set which was illuminated with halogen bulbs and it appeared purple. In that moment of glancing narration that would be why he said purple instead of red.

Questions about the characters on MASH, the cast, the television show and different episodes, about bloopers on MASH, about quotes and if I don't know the answer, I'll do my best to find out!

I have been watching MASH since it was an original show, I also watch it 4 times daily in reruns, I can tell when something has been cut from a show (as it was on FX much more frequently than it has been on Hallmark).
