MIDI and Computer Generated Music - Midi Playback on my Roland RD700 GX

Expert: jay - 12/24/2008

Question
Hello

I am new to MIDI and I am interested to learn how to make my Laptop Computer work well with my keyboard Roland RD700GX.

Objective to have the midi files playback using the patches (sounds) on the Roland RD 700 GX.  SO that I can play along with it.

My Keyboard has a USD Midi port.  I was successful in connecting it to the laptop.  I am also new to Sonar PE V7.

1. I want to know how to assign the patches in the Keyboard to play the different parts in the Midi File.

2. I tried to create a new file and when I played it in the Keyboard it plays on the active patch.  When I check the keyboard patch, it changes.

Hope you can help me here.  I am really new to setting up MIDI Settings.

DO I need a different sound card form the one that is built in into the Laptop.

Best Regards and Happy Holidays.

Macky

Answer
In your keyboard... set it to "Local Control OFF" so that the keyboard MIDI notes have to pass through Sonar first, then back out to the keyboard.

Create 8 separate MIDI tracks in Sonar. Assign them all to the Roland keyboard (input and output) and each one with a different channal (1 - 8). Set the Bank to 0, and then select the patch to the instrument you want to play on that channel.

When you select one of the MIDI channels, it will echo the keyboard MIDI data back out on the channel that you have set, to the patch that you have selected.

So, for example, select track 1, and set the patch to a piano (usually one of the lower numbered patches)... now playing the keyboard should play back the piano. Changing the patch will change the instrument played.

Go through each track and set each one up to the instruments you want to hear play.

Now... you can record the MIDI on each track and have each track play a different instrument.

If you have an existing MIDI file, you will have to separate each instrument to a different channel, then assign that channel to the instrument patch you wish to have play it.

Or, you can record your own MIDI tracks and have them play back.

Hope this points you in the right direction... Have fun!
