Question QUESTION: i can't find a sole with this same question or problem!! i got reason 4 not too long ago and i been using the piano role to make my beats.i want that real sound though so i have a midi keyboard plugged in and can set the channel i want it to play, the noise comes out fine through the reason instruments BUT i can't record for some reason. its weird cuz on cubase the midi input records fine but in reason the midi will work so i can hear the noise but it won't record the noise. if i go to preferences and go to keyboard or devieces and press auto detect it doesn't detect anything. i use a triton extreme to make beats as well and also for my midi input. i use vista as well. what else.... im also selecting what device i want to record with on my layout screen and hitting the little red record button. im very frustrated and can't come to a conclusion someone please help me!!!!
ANSWER: Hi,
There's no need for you to record, since you have the piano roll, you are basically constructing the sequence note by note, there's no need to seperately record because it's all in the software. If you are using Cubase or Cakewalk then yes, you'll have to record, \
If you want to take this recording elsewhere (like an MP3 or an audio CD) just export your track to that.

QUESTION: thank you for the quick reply but im not tryin to record audio, when i think of a melody on reason you shouldn't have to plug in each note one by one. I mean like i said i been doing that but its really only good for very quick patterns. i need to be able to use my surface device (keyboard) and play in my notes using the midi connection. thats how any other reason user does it. i just dont get that real effect clicking the notes in. if u go on youtube and look up someone giving a demo they always play the notes in using their midi control. it takes forever making a beat drawing it in. I think you misunderstood my question so if u could help me out on how to get it recording when i press record that would be much help. if you reference to my first question it explains my problem. If i pick the thor and pick my thor noise, set my midi channel to the thor and play the thor noise plays using my surface device so it seems everythings working properly but then when i press record and play i can still hear it but its not laying the pattern/melody that i played its just a blank colored group that runs down the thor lane. do you understand what i saying now? thanks
ANSWER: Hi,
Sorry for the misunderstanding. What keyboard are u using ?, do you use a desktop or a laptop ?, you might be suffering from latency, but you can't blame anything yet....
So please tell me the setup you have, the hardware and the connections that your setup is currently running on... also check to see if your midi input/output settings on reason are correct. A blank colored box usually means that there was some event registered by reason, but nothing beyond it.

QUESTION: well i have a triton extreme (which for reason isn't put to use except for as a slave device) and i have a midi connect to the computer which is a top of the line desktop i had built for me. I do pretty professional work for industry artist. all my stuff, processing speed, all that is top of the line.im on vista. i don't know a whole lot about computers but i know i have a quad processor. my latency on my M audio software is set with a 6.??ms latency i know that because i have to switch it sometime if im mixing like 50+ tracks with plugins on each one in cubase. i dont know if my soud card is m audio or what or if it has to bei just know i had it out in and i have m audio now. i also know its about $100. On reason in preferences theres two main tabs that refer to midi, i don't have it in front of me but i know theres one that shows if my midi channels are connected and theres a big green check next each connection. then theres another tab in preferences that says keyboard or surface device or something like that, then on that screen it has a window that should be showing my midi connection im pretty sure but it doesn't. i press auto detect and an error window comes up claiming that theres no connection. the weird thing about all that is my keyboard works using midi in cubase so why would it not work in reason. and you were saying something about a latency problem (i know u didn't say that definitely was the problem) but i don't think thats playing a part in my problem because like i said in the last message i can play through reason using my midi connect (with no latency problem), playing reason noises but when its time to record like i said it shows the colored boxes stretching down the note lane but no note activity in it, but i can still hear myself playin thru reason. im just dumbfounded as to why my midi and computer compatibility has a mind of its own and records for cubase and not reason. maybe im not hitting a button u have to hit before u record. i mean i tried highlighting the track on the rack and on the lane last night and it still didn't work. but thats all i do when i try to record i select the channel at the top in adv midi and select my thor,nn-xt,nn-19, whatever im using, i make sure the track is highlighted and i hit record and nothin gets recorded!!! i hope u can help me with my problem. also there is a midi section on my triton so set it just for midi but it seems to not make a difference if its set up or not. also a bit more info i have a special convertor connector thing that i have my midi outlet hooked to my soundcard so maybe the sound cards not reading i have a midi but then again it works for cubase and plays for reason??? thats why this is so frusterating but i got alot of work today!!! thank you for your help!!!!!!im be back to check if u responded by monday so by all means take ur time.
Answer Hi,
Now that should have taken sometime for you to write. Anyway, what's frustrating is that I have Cakewalk and FruityLoops, which is something like Reason....it's more of a pattern based sequencer, where you create the events by the midi keyboard. It's able to do both.
When you switch between the softwares, are you just tabbing them -one for another or are you closing the previous software completely before opening the next one ?, because if you open both then the softwares may be fighting for the same port and Windows will assign whichever came first..
