Question
Hey Vijay,

I have a Fantom G6, MPC4000, Cubase 4 LE running on a MAC G4 with a Zoom HD16 control interface. I would like to see if you can help me set this system up in the most user friendly way possible. I read a question you answered last year that was similar in setup but the software/hardware combo was different. The user had an ASR, MPC 2500, and a DIGI 002. You gave them a way that you could use every piece of hardware to trigger samples with ProTools at the center of everything. I find my self composing the most on the G6,(since I don't sample all that much) but I know the 4000 is a beast and a great tool to use. I would use it to sample drums the most, but the G6 sampling capabilities are much easier to use and seem to fit the bill. If I were to use the G6 to sequence, MPC to sample, and Cubase to master the final product, what MIDI configuration should I use? The Zoom HD16 is a multitrack recorder/Cubase control in one unit and if I could use the 80 gig drive on the Zoom to store the songs that would be good. I'm relating the Zoom to the Digi 002 in the sense it controls Cubase as opposed to ProTools, but the MIDI ports on the Zoom are one in and one out. What do you think? I guess I'm not sure the best way to utilize everything to it's fullest extent.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi,

I think you should connect the audio outs of the G6 to the MPC for it to sample it in, connect the MIDI OUT/IN of the G6 to the computer that's running Protools via your control interface. Only thing, please swap the midi cables such that Protools is able to control the G6 and G6 can transmit to Protools...so MIDI IN jack goes to MID OUT port (of the keyboard) and vice versa.

So, in effect you've got the G6 to sequence, then capture the sample in the MPC. Doesn't the Zoom have an audio in jack ?, because a MIDI IN/OUT jack on the Zoom will only help if you're going to record directly onto the Zoom - which may not be the case here. If you feel it's worth it, then you can directly record into the Zoom, just ensure that your levels and stuff are correctly setup in the G6...

hth!
