MIDI and Computer Generated Music - Cubase SX3 and Ensiniq KS32

Expert: jay - 4/13/2009

Question
QUESTION: How can I get my ensoniq KS32 to transmit data into Cubase SX3? Currently, I am using a Midisport 4x4 and can see the midi ins light fliker when I press a key on the Ensoniq and see the input led in Cubase but I can not hear any sound. I can for instance use the mouse to directly press a drum pad in cubase and hear the drum but I am unable to get a sound when I use the Ensoniq to play the sound. I do not have a copy of the Ensoniq manual and it is hard finding one on the Web.

Hope I have given you enough information to assist me.

Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Joe,

I don't quite understand what it is you are asking... what "sound" is it that you are expecting to play when you press a key on the keyboard? If you are using a VSTi plug-in, then you will have to set up your sequencer track to the same port as the Ensoniq is connected to, and the same channel as you are transmitting the data on.

Are you able to record MIDI notes onto a MIDI track?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Sorry about the confusion. I am trying to use the Ensoniq KS32 as a Midi controller to play the VSTi in Cubase. Up to this point I am not able to do that. Eventhough the KS32 appears to be connected, I am not able to select any vsti and play the instrument using the KS32. I am trying to say that the Midi connection is not yeilding the result that I expected. I previously used a Yamaha DX27 whic is now broken and everything worked just great. I was able to transmit midi data between the Yamaha and Cubase but not so with the Ensoniq. I though perhaps that the setup was not right and am looking for some help on how to get the Ensoniq to control the VSTi. I have several VSTi instruments and from your comment it would seem that I would have to set a port for each VSTi. The way it has worked for me in the past is to select a VSTi and select all midi or a specific midi channel and the output for the selected VSTi.

I hope this making sense. If not I will try to work out another way.

Thanks.

Answer
OK - thx for the clarification... if you previously used another keyboard and it worked, then I would suspect something is set differently in the new keyboard such as the channel. I don't use Cubase but most DAW's have a "MIDI Monitor" that shows you all MIDI data coming into it... you could use this to get a better idea of what is going on. Many VSTi plug-ins also have this function so you can see exactly what is being received at the VSTi input.

From your description, it sounds like you know how to set up the VSTi... so try recording on a MIDI track and see what gets recorded. But like you say, simply setting the input to OMNI mode should capture all channel data.

As for the port... this should be assigned automatically to the first available port, but many VSTi give you the option of selecting others, even ones that don't physically exist. So it is just something to check.

Sorry I can't be of more help... if I was sitting in front of your computer, I could just go through and check a number of things... but basically, just try to follow the MIDI path from the keyboard to the VSTi and then to the Audio track which is outputing the VSTi audio... somewhere along this chain there is a broken link. (You might also check that the internal VSTi output is set to the same output as the audio track that it is assigned to.

That's about all I can suggest for now. Please let me know if you figure it out so I can pass along the solution to others.

Cheers,
j
