MIDI and Computer Generated Music - link.midi 4x4 midi/usb interface and triton le

Question
I am trying to get my songs off my triton and into my computer.  I hooked up midi cables from my keyboard to my Tapco midi 4x4 box.  The one output #1 red light came on and all the green activity light came on.  I then hooked up the usb connection from the midi to the computer.  I then open cool edit pro and even sonar but can't figure out how to make the songs beats and songs from my keyboard transfer into my computer.  Am I missing a connection?  a keyboard icon pops up in the right hand, bottom corner of my computer, shhowing it's acknowledging the hookup nut the two red lights on the keyboard icon don't light up as I assume they should.  What does that mean?  I have windows xp.  Thank you so much for your help and your time.

Answer
It sounds like you have lots of nice blinky lights... but no music... perhaps you should go into lighting and forget audio...

Seriously... take one step at a time:

- First, make sure the Tapco is installed correctly and Windows decides that it likes it, at least temporarily. It doesn't have to be a deep committed relationship... but this connection has to be established first or nothing else will work.

Then...
- Keyboard MIDI OUT goes to MIDI IN of the Tapco.
- Keyboard MIDI IN goes to MIDI OUT of the Tapco.
- Make sure this is the same MIDI IN/OUT port (there are 4).

- Open Sonar and set up a MIDI track.
- Set MIDI track input to OMNI or to the keyboard.
- Arm the track (set record on), then press RECORD.
- Play the keyboard.
- Go back and make sure MIDI data is being recorded correctly (View it on Sonar's EVENT LIST in the VIEW menu).

- Now... to get the "songs" off the Triton is a more difficult question... this could be done by a SYSEX transfer (yikes!) or by sending the MIDI data to the MIDI OUT and recording it in Sonar (a slightly lower level of yikes).

- Lets just deal with the first part first...

- Can you get things working to the point where you can record MIDI data to a MIDI track in Sonar?

Follow up with this, and with any further questions... and we'll go from there.

cheers,
j
