MIDI and Computer Generated Music - no midi signal to vst synths

Expert: jay - 5/17/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hi there,
I am running Cubase vst5 on both my laptop & my desktop. On the laptop my soft synths function as they should but on the desktop there is no midi signal going to them when activated but if i re-route the midi signal to one of my "proper" synths then it will play the midi info as it should. Any ideas or will you need more info?
Many thanks,
Dean

ANSWER: More info...

Regarding the desktop:
1. How is the MIDI signal getting into the desktop (hardware)?
2. Can you record the MIDI info in Cubase?
3. Do the VSTi soft synths play via MIDI info sent to it via a MIDI track from within Cubase?

QUESTION: Hi there,
Just to let you know the answers to your questions are:
1. Either from my controller keyboard (midi "in" signal is fine)or by "drawing" the info with a mouse in the usual manner.
2. Yes
3. No (there appears to be no "midi out" signal on the transport bar when they are sent to the the soft synths but the signal is there if it is sent to a module/old fashioned style synth.I do get a signal reading in the actual track column though for some reason.)
Thanks again,
Dean

Answer
Hi Dean,

Sorry for the delay...

This is really difficult to answer because it sounds like a set-up issue... I'm not all that familiar with Cubase as I normally use Sonar, but it should work the same...

So you have the exact same software setup on both a laptop and a desktop, but the softsynths just don't play on the laptop... is this correct?

You sound like you know the basics of how to set things up, but here's a few things to check, perhaps it will help you to discover the problem:

Here are the basic steps in setting up a VSTi in any DAW:

- Set up a MIDI track... assign its input to OMNI and ensure it can record MIDI data sent from an external controller, such as your keyboard.
- Load a VSTi soft synth into Cubase.
- Assign the MIDI track to channel 1, and set its output to send data to the VSTi. (If the VSTi has a "MIDI MONITOR" function, use it to test... send some MIDI data to the VSTi and verify it is being received.)
- Set up an AUDIO track... make sure the output is being sent to your monitors. (Record some audio and make sure you can hear it played back).
- Assign the input of this Audio track to receive audio from the OUTPUT of the VSTi synth.
- Set up the VSTi synth to send and receive MIDI data on channel 1.
- Set up the VSTi synth to send AUDIO data to the AUDIO track.
- At this point, playing the keyboard, should send MIDI OUT to the DAW MIDI track... which echoes it to the VSTi... which plays some AUDIO according to the MIDI data... and sends it to the AUDIO track, which then sends it to your MONITORS... at which point you sit back and enjoy the sweet sounds of your music...

Some DAW's combine the MIDI/AUDIO track into one, called an INSTRUMENT track... which makes it a bit easier as the connection from the output of the VSTi to the audio track is automatic.

Please follow up with any questions or if anything above is not clear...
