Subject: Connecting to the internet

Question
I just got an iMac OS 9.2 and I'm trying to get it to connect to the internet. I see the airport software on there, but when i go to click it it tells me that the hardware couldn't be found. Do I need to go buy a new airport card? I get my internet through Vonage and I don't know how to get it to connect. Do I need to get a router?

Answer
Dear Rachel,
Sorry for the lateness of my reply.  I was in the hospital and am getting caught up now.

Your internet should come in through an ISP like your cable company or your phone company.  However, if Vonage is your internet and phone company, then you should have a phone adapter/router that enables the phone to be used over the internet (VOIP--Voice Over Internet Protocol) and USUALLY provides a router (4 ethernet ports) or one ethernet jack for a computer.  Vonage offers a combination product called the Motorola VT2142RB that provides a router AND a phone adapter.

Here's what you need to look for:  Look on the back of the Vonage adapter for a free (open) ethernet port (it looks like an oversized phone jack).  Take an ethernet patch cord (available at any office supply or computer appliance store) and plug it into the iMac on one side and the back of the Vonage adapter on the other.  Unplug the Vonage adapter and wait one minute.  Leave the computer on and plug in the Vonage adapter.  Let the lights light up and after about a minute, you should be able to open Internet Explorer and get access to the internet.  If not, you need to call Vonage to assist you in setting it up and/or getting the right adapter. Call their tech support at  1-866-243-4357.

I hope this was helpful without being too weird or hard to understand.  If so, please ask a followup question and I'll get right back to you, okay?
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Wrobel
