Subject: Network my G3 to my G5

Question
I have been trying to network my G3 OS 9.1 to my G5 10.5.3. I thought I could through my 2Wire box from AT&T. Apple can set up the G5 to file share, but knows nothing about the G3.
HELP!

Answer
Dear Heidi,
Your 2Wire DSL modem/router should offer no complications for connecting your two computers in a network.  As you know, both computers must be in sharing mode to enable two-way networking, so you need to start up the G3 and go to the Rainbox Apple in the upper left and select Control Panels and choose AppleTalk.  Make sure that that AppleTalk is enabled, then move to the Control Panels again and choose File Sharing.  You must have a user name and password entered and saved in the File Sharing window.

Now, with File Sharing enabled in the G5, go to the OS X System Preferences and then choose Sharing.  Make sure that File Sharing is enabled and Remote Login is enabled. Make a note of the address that is listed immediately underneath the Computer Name.

In the G3, go to the Rainbow Apple menu again and select the Chooser.  Select AppleShare and if the G5 doesn't appear in the window on the right, then enter the address that was listed in the G5.  You should see a window asking for User Name and password.  Enter your G5 user name and  your G5 admin password.  Your G3 should connect to the G5 without problems.  If you have any trouble, write a followup question and I'll get right back to you, okay?
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Wrobel
