Subject: Craftsman lathe belt replacement

Question
Hi Dave,
I have an old Craftsman metal lathe, model 101.07403, 12", 36" c-to-c. The belt which connects the spindle pulley to the countershaft pulley is completely worn out. I cannot determine how to remove/replace the spindle pulley. I've loosened several set screws on collars, pulley and back gear, but the spindle is still firmly attached. I don't want to damage the spindle or bearings by pounding on it, but don't even know if it removes from the front or back.

I searched the web extensively and have found and purchased a parts list, but cannot find an owner's or service manual anywhere.

I also don't know if I will need to replace the belt with an exact part, or can use a belt purchased from an auto parts or hardware store.

I would appreciate any help with this problem. Thank you.  Martin

Answer
Try looking searching or posting on a forum site like http://www.practicalmachinist.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php or
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlas_craftsman/.
I also found a manual on ebay. Item number: 270150322603

Lots of good links here also http://metalworking.com/listservers.html

Check this out !! http://www.lathes.co.uk/craftsman/page2.html

Also sears www3.sears.com still has parts for it.

Hope this helps.
