Question Here are the specs for my computer:
Model Name: Mac Pro OSX 10.4.11
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
SMC Version: 1.7f10
The issue:
At the desktop level, whenever I click on an icon or folder, a black square appears around that icon, until I click on something else, then another black square appears. Also, under the apple menu, there are 2 Restarts, 2 Shut Downs, 2 Log Out MAC2.
I'm running CS3 applications (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) It seems to take an extraordinarily long time to shut down each program and when I try to restart the computer with any of those programs still open, I get an error message saying that the shutdown process cannot continue for each program and it forces me to "Force Quit".
Any thoughts?
Answer 1] All OS's require monthly maintenance. For 10.4 I recommend AppleJack.
Download, install and run http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
It may require two restarts after running. It may need to be run twice.
2] The Finder plist may be corrupt. Move or delete it and restart.
HD > username > library > preferences folder.
3] Make a new test user and logout and login as new user. Test. If the new user is okay, that means the problem is in the old user's folder - a plist or kext (extension)
4] Startup with shift key down (Safe Mode) - this disables third party extensions.
5] Corrupt fonts - Font Explorer X from linotype has the option to clean System Font Caches and Application Font Caches. It is a good font manager. http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX
