Expert: Jeff Greenberg Date: 6/27/2008 Subject: email system compatable with outlook express
Question Hi Jeff.
I am a computer novis who have just moved my website to another host. That
part is fine and operating but the email part is taking what seems like forever.
I am moving to Hostgator.com and they tell me I need an Outlook Express to
run my emails with them. I have a MacOSX (10.3.9). I can't seem to download
rither Outlook Express or Thunderbird which was the other option I could use
according to HG. Is my operatingf system too old to dowmload these? My
webdesigner also tells me I need to download Notepad++ which will
allow me
to maintain and change my website according to her. My issue here is that I
can't seem to download that one either...
Thanks for any advice you can give on the mess I'm in.
Best regards
Sofia
PS. I have given my partners email address as mine is busy propagating at
present (at least that is what I hope it is doing...)
Answer Sofia,
Sigh. Your new isp aren't very macintosh strong.
Outlook express has been dead on the Mac OS for a number of years now. OSX Mail (even in 10.3.9) is very usable (although I'll tell you, if your mac can handle it, I'd strongly suggest moving to tiger or leopard)
The Incoming mail server (which will be something like mail.yoururl.com or pop.newsgator.com)
The outgoing mail server (which will be something like smtp.newsgator.com)
If you get this information, I'm sure we can manage to walk through it.
Side note: I don't use my registrar/host for my email. You can have google host your email (using gmail servers, but for *your domain) by going to google.com/a
This is free and you can use any mail client (like the one that comes with OSX) as well as the gmail interface.
