Macintosh OS/Internet issues

Question
Hi John,

Had my iMac for 9 months with no issues until the last couple of days.
I'm finding that web pages are taking forever to load and download speeds are crazily low. I have a 6 meg internet connection but struggling to get 24k!!

Wi-Fi connection shows full strength on the desktop.

I have connected to the same router with 2 Windows laptops and my iPhone and the speed is between 4-5 meg.

I have checked Activity Monitor and there is nothing slowing down the system... generally using a max of 10%.

I have 8 Gb Ram, so no issues there.

I have installed Firefox to test an alternative browser but the same results... dead slow.

Everything else (games, documents etc.) works perfectly, quickly and as it should.

Very occasionally the speed will return to full for a couple of minutes before dwindling away to nothing.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Answer
That's a good question.

Probably wouldn't make a difference, but maybe try on the iMac using different DNS sever address.

Like 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Just to see if that makes a difference. A youtube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onXAdPa-KiA   reminded me of that.

I did see a similar question to yours at :https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4099246?start=0&tstart=0

But no real fix/solution.

If you get a chance, try connecting the iMac to your router with an ethernet cable - that might tell you if the problem is Airport related.

Let me know how it goes...

Expertise

I can answer most Mac and related questions. I still use OS 9 from time to time as well as OS X 10.4 through 10.7. Let me know me what model Mac you use and what version of OS X you use since many times it is helpful to know (10.5/Leopard, 10.7/Lion, etc).

Experience

I've been a Mac fan since 1990 when I first got a Mac SE/30. Been using Macs at home and at work ever since.

Help neighbors with their PC's and Mac's. Ran a Macintosh bulletin board system for many years. I've lately been asking a lot of questions to the AllExperts linux gurus, and thought I would try my hand and give back by answering questions about Macs.
