Macintosh OS/lost sound using firefox

Question
QUESTION: Dear Jeff

I seem to have lost sound when using firefox. Sound still works when playing iTunes. Any ideas? I use a Mac OSX, 10.8.5.

Thanks, Janet

ANSWER: If it plays in safari and not in firefox, likely something is wrong with the flash plugin.

Firefox has a troubleshooting document here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-common-audio-and-video-issues

This is a thornier area than OSX - really what's going wrong is (likely) you have:
1) a problem with a your user in Firefox. You can try creating a new user just to TEST if sound works in a new user (meaning something is wrong with your user - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
2) There's a plugin problem. Something like flash hasn't updated correctly. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-flash-plugin-view-videos-animations-games
3) Another plugin is disabling flash/ads/sound.
4) A permissions issue - recently firefox may have asked your permission to play sound (or other info) on a site and it was denied. See info about the permissions manager here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/permissions-manager-give-ability-store-passwords-set-cookies-more

Yes, I'm sorry it's not an 'easy' answer on this. If #1 clears up the problem (a new user) then it's something with your existing user. I might suggest disabling all your extensions and seeing if that clears up the problem (that's #2+3). #4 is the least likely, but possible.

See where that takes you and let me know!

QUESTION: Oh Jeff, I SHOULD have checked Safari, but didn't think of it (I never use it). And there's no sound with Safari either. So that means it's not a firefox problem. Yet the MAc is capable of sound ...

I'm sorry I wasted your time with the answer you gave.

Janet

Answer
Janet,

My guess is that something is wrong with the flash plugin.

Try downloading Google Chrome - it has it's own separate version of flash.

If this works, all you need to do is download and reinstall flash (which should fix the problem for safari and firefox.
